Re: Romcenter 3 wishlist

Post by AnDreF » Tue Aug 25, 2015 6:51 am

First of all your application is great. I have a few suggestions:
- not just 7z support, but also torrentzip (and torrent7z) standard, I´m not really sure if there´s any real difference in implementation about torrentzip/7z, or just a set of configurations (like compression rate or something like that), but it would be nice to have this option in plain sight.
- Probably I just dumb, but I spended a weekend trying to find a way to create "per system" folders, like a CPS-1, CPS-2, NeoGeo... so emulators like retro-arch with FBAlpha core don´t complain that I´m trying to load a zip in another core. What I did was actually get the list of games from the source (luckly cps-1 and cps-2 had gameslist text files, neogeo was a little tricky but could get it ), batch copied from my mame fullset and then used Romcenter in the generated dat (with FBA) to correct the files (also used FBA to grab the missing games in each system), after all that I had 3 folders only with the files that I needed, not really what I wanted but was a start. My other problem was there not a easy way to get rid of clones, I mean, there´s more than 20 Street Fighter 2 clones, most of then are hacks of hacks. Sure I can merge the clones with the parent, this way I would have only one zip, but tell that to king of fighters that each clone is 40mb... I´m aware that there´s not really categorized "systems", even in mame xml, except for maybe driver, so it would be really dificult or wierd to implement something like that, since not every dat file has a system category. Anyway all this brings me to the next sugestion:
- When I was looking for tools that could helped me I found mentions here on the forum about ROMVault, even though it was not what I wanted, the way the organized dats and even roms "ToSort" and "audited" was a nice touch that with a little refine could be the real deal. Romcenter today in version 4 can categorize the Database, but not the Rom files, just that would actually saved a ton of time for me (actually I´m still looking for a way to separate the clones from the main rom set, probably will have to make a tool to do that), so a really nice feature would be a option that the same way you have the sets merged, you have a hierarchical foldering categorization. This way you have the main parent in the root: D:\roms\sf2.zip and all the crappy clones and bootlegs in a D:\roms\sf2\<put_thousand_clones_here>.zip. I know that probably is just a very small niche that would use a feature like that, but don´t harm to try :)
Another way to aproach is file operations directly in the Database treeview, you can select a game, or multiple games, lets say all the "Clones" in the list, and select "Move roms to" and select the folder, this could also remove duplicated roms, if there where another rom with the same name in other folder. Maybe this sugestion is more realistic in terms of overall usability since would serve more people.

Anyway keep the good work and I hope my post can be any use. Even if is to let you know that there´s people anxious for the next release :D

I could add a possibility to switch icons later in v4 as I did on a previous version (v3 I think). Maybe just by switching files on installation folder. I should still have the icons somewhere...

Hi there. Only registered users can edit posts. Guests don't have this ability. You have posted your comments as guest, so... :) No problem for the DP though. As for customizing colours, perhaps Eric (the author) can let us know if there will be such an ability in RC4.

Sorry for the DP, but I couldn't find the Edit button to add this comment.

As an example of how wonderful life is for the Color Deficient , I had to ask my Daughter to look so I could answer the pre-post question about What is the main color used on this web site.

I'd love to be able to use this software, but it is not "Color Deficient" friendly. (were mostly not "Color Blind")
Like about 10% of the world population, I cannot easily distinguish Red from Green very well.

I fire this up and I can't tell which are which, they all look the same.
I know I can use the filters to filter out what I need, but this is very inconvenient as compared to what "normal" people can do, just look at the screen.

Is there a way to change the colors to an easier to see, like Green for Good, Yellow for Missing, Blue for Bad and so on?
Those type of colors are easily distinguishable even to most of us with this condition.

Thanks
-dl

Snapshot will be added after rc4 release.

Hello,
I think a great future would be to add a third panel in the middle of romcenter to see the snapshot picture of the selected game for e.g. from mameui. So I can easier decide if want to go after the missing files.

Try downloading the "manual installation version". It has no setup, you just unzip the files and run romcenter. All data files are stored under the "romcenter" of your path (if you unzip it to D:\RC, all datafiles will be stored under D:\RC\romcenter).

RC358 installs something on C:\ but i decided to use my own path.
Dont let em install on harddrives i absolutly deny!
I installed, and after i recognized installing something on C:\, i decided to deinstall.
After that, every Point in the Program was grey, so it wasnt usable!!

Thanks for reading...

No-Intro's datomatic allows customizing .dats before downloading.
But redump.org doesn't! :-(

That'd be awesome!

Also count me in for 7z support! :-D

Thanks!

try my application, it will let you manipulate redump.org dat files as you wish

I'm just starting to use ROM manager but 7zip support will be great.
BTW, any dates of v4 release?

7zip will be supported in .net v4 version.
Dat filtering is an idea for a future version.

Performance

Post by maeztro » Sun May 15, 2011 8:54 am

Thank you for posting this. I just thought I was going nuts and a virus has invaded my pc. Fortunately still have 3.56 for reinstall. But still the best rom manager, in my uninformed world.

The latest version (3.57) seems to have some performance issues. Either use 3.56 or wait for Eric to take a look at it. Perhaps he can improve the speed in 3.58 and bring it back to what it was in 3.56.

Guest wrote:Any chance on working on the performance, it's appalling!

On my Quad core PC, 3GB RAM, 1TB of HD, it can take 30mins or so to import Mame set

Changing split options, well I think I killed RomCenter after about a hour of hard disc hammering.

I really like RomCenter, I used 2.71 for ages, and although ClrMamePro was much quicker I liked the user interface. But comparing the performance of ClrMamePro to RomCenter 3 is like chalk and cheese.

I know this is probably down to the external database engine you use, but it does distract from an otherwise excellent product.

I just downloaded the new version, it's been months since I've updated my MAME set so I forget what version I was using before. But the updating does seem to take forever compared to what I remember. For example, when manually renaming a romset and refreshing the list with F5, it never used to take 10 to 15 minutes, maybe a minute or so. There are occasions where a romset needs renamed manually, for example I had "batridk", which needed to be renamed to "batriderk". But Romcenter was seeing it as "batrider", so I couldn't rename it within the program. I manually added the e, and refreshed, and it took about 15 minutes to refresh thew list. It also took about 2 hours to add the rom path BTW. Is there a reason it's taking so much longer? Is there a setting in the options that would speed this up?

I had this idea in mind, but never thought how to show it on gui. This is a good idea.

Posting this wish here, just to have it in mind. I guess it may come up in a future v4.x version...

The ability to go (via a file's the context menu) from DB note to ROM path node and vice versa.

Explaining: When rightclicking on a file in a rom path, a "Go to the respective database node" entry should exist. This entry should have the same children as the tree database node ("All games (main->clones)" , "All games (flat)", etc)

Respectively, rightclicking on a database game, a "Go to the rompath node" entry should exist, having as children all the rom paths in which the given rom exists.

Clicking on any of the child entries, the selection should be moved to the respective node (when on database it should move to the selected rom path and vice versa).

Hey mate,
add another vote for 7z support.

IMO your ROM manager is the best around - so much easier to use than a few of the others - however the lack of 7z support makes it, unfortunately, un-usable for what seems to be the most common compression method for distributing content.

Re: Romcenter 3 wishlist

7z. This is absolutely necessary. I would love to use this software but everything I have is 7z. I know you can integrate 7z libs into your project. Unless it violates some license this should be top priority.

Please, i need 7Zip support, i thought it was already supported like a lot of tools! :(
Im very dissapointed this romcenter doesn't support 7Z!
If you don't implement this soon this is not any good -_-
And i bet it's very easy to implement... please don't be lazy =_=
