what if i have more roms than are what in the dat file?

Post by angelus »

hi all

i just got romcenter and iam on step three on the tutorial http://forum.romcenter.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1866 and i also just got MameUI64 .136
now in mamui it has a list of 8000odd roms but i know i have way more roms than that though iam not sure if they will all work in mameui and also i want to only keep original versions of the roms i have i dont think i want hacks and other things.

how would it be best to go about this?

UPDATE: ok um wow i finished with step three and now all my roms are apprently grey :o
so i selected the rom path and seleted "fix" and going ot see what that does

ok so here the result:

Hello.
angelus wrote:UPDATE: ok um wow i finished with step three and now all my roms are apprently grey :o
RomCenter tutorial wrote:Gray is used when a specific file or rom does not exist in the database. Gray files are not valid games supported by the selected emulator version. They may be files containing special info about the roms or any other info but they are not part of the game. They may even be roms that are supported by older or newer versions of the selected emulator. If you wish, you can delete them and be sure the game will not be affected.
Most likely, your roms are either from a different emulator than the one supported by the database you created, or from a different version of the same emulator.

Total roms fixed: 0 means that none of your roms was altered/deleted. That's good because the problem is probably somewhere else and it would be a pity to ruin your roms while trying to fix them.

Green games : 1, yellow games : 18, red games : 8497 tells us much. Having so many red roms (almost all of them) means you probably have a very different database than the actual roms you have. Most likely, the roms supported by the database are from a different emulator. Which emulator (and which version) is the database for? Which emulator your roms are for?

Good, now we have a better idea what's going on. You need to have a separate datafile for each emulator and emulator version you wish to verify. Find 2 datafiles, one for goodnes 2.01 and one for the version of fusion you have, in order to create RC databases from them. I don't have any experience with these emulators, so try the links that exist in this page. If you don't find anything there, try google. Perhaps someone else can give you more info on these emulators.

Since almost all roms are green, it seems the datafile you have is the correct one. Now all you need is an emulator to run them.
angelus wrote:so how i can play them right? or what? um how do i play them? cant i use mameui?
goodnes: Nintendo Entertainment System. This means you need an appropriate Nintendo emulator. I don't think these roms are compatible with mame.

A quick googling for "nes emulator" revealed this link among others.

AFAIK, the only way to do that is to manually delete the roms you don't want from the datafile and then use it to create the database. However, wait a while from Eric to confirm it, just in case there is an easier way to do what you want.

Go to preferences/romsests and check 'keep one rom per set' and see if it does what you want.

WTF. If you download a bunch of NES and Mega Drive ROMs that say GoodNES and GoodGen, you're better off renaming them using the according GoodTools instead of RomCenter.

No you aren't. Not if you want accuracy, anyway. Goodtools are outdated while a DAT system like No-Intro is constantly being updated for accuracy. Goodtools is good for maintaining a collection of hacks and bad-dumps, but for it lists many bad dumps as good dumps and vice versa and it is missing many modern ROM dumps. RomCenter is also open-ended and lets you deal with each ROM individually if you want to, and it is easy to use.

So, I say to use No-Intro dats in RomCenter for the best available dumps, and use Goodtools on anything that you would only find in a Goodtools database for the rest. Total victory would be achieved.
